Episode Transcript:

One of the most powerful skills in the world is the ability to speak persuasively. It is to be able to communicate an idea with impact that drives the behavior of somebody else towards your goals. If you can do that, then you can mobilize nations to do your bidding. If you can do that, you can mobilize customers to go buy your thing. If you can, if you can do that, if you can communicate persuasively, you can convince your wife to eat dinner where you want to, or you can convince your children to brush their teeth and eat their broccoli. Right. The ability to communicate persuasively is such a high value skill. Such a high value skill.

And it’s why throughout the history of humankind, the orators, the communicators, the storytellers of the tribe, were revered. And the most influential wasn’t the strongest, wasn’t the fastest. It was the people who could communicate the most persuasively, impactfully, and most compellingly. And so I want to share with you two simple ideas that will help you become a more persuasive communicator. If you were to do nothing else but these two things, it would level you up very, very quickly and put you, I would say, into the higher echelons of persuasive communicators. So the first thing that you have to do if you want to be a persuasive communicator is you need to really, really understand what it is you’re talking about. You need to understand what it is you think about that thing and the way that you gain that type of clarity of thought, that type of deep understanding, is through writing. Okay, this might seem like, okay, I wanted to learn how to speak more persuasively.

Now you got me over here writing. Well, before you can communicate persuasively, you have to have ideas worth communicating persuasively. And that only comes through the crucible of actually sitting down and doing the hard work of thinking about what it is you think on a topic. So often, we are just headline readers. We read the headline, the news, or what comes across buzfeed, and we think we understand a topic. But then once we get into conversation about it, we realize, oh, our understanding of this is actually quite shallow. That’s 90% of people on 90% of topics. If you want to be persuasive, you need to understand very deeply the thing that you’re talking about.

Now, I recommend sitting down, creating a journaling practice, creating a writing practice, where you’re exploring the different aspects of your life and what you think on topics. So, for instance, I’m not going to sit down necessarily and journal about what I think about cosmic relations with theoretical aliens. I mean, I kind of done that in the past with science fiction, my novels there, but it’s not pertinent to my life at this moment. Right. And so something that would be more pertinent is, what do I think about cognitive biases? What are the cognitive biases that I see affecting my life most? And by journaling, writing, and getting clear on those, I can now understand more clearly my own psychology, but also the psychology that drives the behavior of the people around me. So that would be a topic really worth exploring and gaining deeper insights around. And so, for you, your life is different than mine. I don’t know what those topics are for you, but you need to explore them.

You need to explore those things that you have thought very, very deeply about it, because there’s nothing less influential, less impactful, less persuasive than somebody who doesn’t know what they’re talking about. So, number one, you got to learn how to think clearly on a topic. You do that through writing. The second tip, then, to becoming a more persuasive communicator, is to have deep conviction in what you’re communicating. Often, the thing that decides who is more persuasive in a conversation is simply who believes what they’re saying more deeply. That’s it. That’s not a great proxy for getting to the truth, like, the objective truth on, like, okay, what is the actual best course of action here? So often the person in the meeting who has the right idea, if they’re not the most convicted by that idea and communicating that conviction, then it comes across as them not believing in it and that doubt that hesitancy does not breed persuasiveness. And so the person who is maybe an idiot, who has not really fully formed their thoughts on a topic, who is communicating it with deep conviction, they can often get the crowds to side with them simply because they sound so confident.

Obviously, that’s not the type of persuasiveness that we want to have in our own lives. Right? We don’t want to just be shallow charlatans who communicate with confidence and therefore, people believe us, even though our ideas are actually garbage. We want to communicate impactful ideas that we truly believe in in a confident manner. And that’s why the first step here is to spend the time thinking clearly and getting very, very drilled down onto what you actually think and believe on a topic. That way, when you go to communicate it with conviction and confidence, you believe in what the thing is because you’ve thought about it. And if you can marry those two things, rather than just being a shallow huckster who talks confidently but doesn’t know what they’re talking about, or versus just knowing what you’re talking about, but failing to communicate it with conviction and confidence, if you can be the person that marries those two, you are going to be in the upper echelons of persuasive communicators. Because you know what you’re talking about and you believe in what you’re talking about. The only way to do that is by getting very clear on what you think on a topic and then learning how to speak with conviction and belief.

And that’s a little bit harder depending on your personality type. Some people that’ll come more naturally too, but that is the recipe right there. So now it’s just a matter of breaking it down into micro subskills and then practice this thing, rehearsing, getting the reps. And if you do that enough times, you will become a more persuasive communicator, which I truly wish for you because it is a powerful unlock in the world of business, but more importantly, just in the game of life. So I hope this brings you guys value. As always, thanks for being here. We’ll catch you around these parts tomorrow, but till then, stay hyper focused, my friend.
