Episode Transcript:

Hey, what’s up guys? Welcome back to the podcast. Today we’re going to talk about what I believe to be one of the greatest risks that any entrepreneur, any investor, any human can take, and it’s a risk that most of us are not even aware that we’re taking. And so this came to mind because I was on a podcast the other day, and.

Anthony: whenever you’re on a podcast, I always like to ask you, tell me about your origin story, where’d you come from? And all this. And I always tell the story of how I started from that rock bottom place. Like in the back of that van, my fiancé just left me. I had like tons of debt and like, just, life sucks, right?

Anthony: And that’s a, that’s a nice easy place to start the story though truthfully, you know, life doesn’t happen like that. It’s not usually just like this moment in time where. Everything suddenly changes. Those, those moments do occur, but generally, you know, we go through these iterations and chapter changes and it’s not that stark of a contrast.

Anthony: Anyways, I, I [00:01:00] start the story from there and talk about that rock bottom place. And one of the things about being at rock bottom. That I’ve observed over the years of like, personally having been there, but then also like working with people who have been there or are, you know have a piece of their story where they overcame and got out of rock bottom to go onto like massive success.

Anthony: And one of the things about being in rock bottom. that I’ve observed is that it’s actually a blessing in a lot of ways because when you’re at rock bottom, you really have no choice but to, to do something, to do something different and, and start moving forward or moving up because you’re as low as you can possibly get.

Anthony: So if you continue on doing what you’ve been doing, Things aren’t going to get worse. You’re hardy there at rock bottom. And so usually what ends up happening now is the pain of your reality. Living at rock bottom is so great that it finally motivates you to get out of your own way, to change the things in your life that have to change in order for you to start climbing out of that hole.

Anthony: At least that’s how it was for me in the back of that van. , [00:02:00] like realizing in those, that those moments at those nights when I was just, you know, we, I was parked in the back of a gym in downtown Oakland and that’s a scary place to be in a van at nighttime because there’s a lot of stuff happening on the streets and people knocking on your windows and trying to get into your van.

Anthony: And you, you really, you really reflect on the fact that like, this isn’t where you want to spend your life. And that was the thing that kept recurring in my mind was the thought that like, I wasn’t born for this, this isn’t what I was put on this planet for. And. An overly spiritual, religious person, but I don’t, I do believe in like this, this cosmic sense that we all have a grand purpose, a grand role to play.

Anthony: And I, I knew for me that this was not the story. I was not living the story that. I had been put on this planet to, to live, to tell. That wasn’t my story. I didn’t want that to be my story. And so when you’re in that rock bottom place, you start changing things. You start doing everything that you can think of because the alternative is just so filled with pain.

Anthony: And so for a lot of people that go on [00:03:00] to achieve a lot of success in life, I I’ve noticed that they come from either humble beginnings or they come from that rock bottom place. They come from a, a place of lack, and it’s from that lack that they seek to fill themselves. That whole, that, that feeling of like, I’m not fulfilled.

Anthony: That can be a great motivator to go out there and achieve in incredible things. I think what they, what, what do they say? Chips on shoulders puts, puts chips in pockets. So if you have a chip on your shoulder, you’re going to be motivated to get out there and prove the world wrong. And, and that can often lead to a lot of success.

Anthony: Material success, maybe not like internal, like that’s a whole different thing that we’ll unpack in a, you know, later episode. But when I’m on these podcasts and they, they we’re talking about my rock bottom. I always find it like it’s important to take a moment to recognize that rock bottom sucks, but it’s not the worst place you could possibly be, which is very counterintuitive because you’re like, well, it’s rock bottom.

Anthony: It’s as low as you can get, but at least from rock bottom, you have the motivation now and the clear path of like, I gotta [00:04:00] get out of here. I think the harder place for people to be is. Not at rock bottom, but living a life of good enough, A life that is good but not great. They’re comfortable. They have that good job.

Anthony: It’s not a job they love. It doesn’t spark their soul with joy. They have the nice house. It’s not the house they want. They have the family, but they’re not spending and engaging with their family in a way that feels like. It’s super fulfilling, right? So like everything is good and, and you feel like I can’t complain.

Anthony: And so you just keep going and doing the thing that you’ve always been doing, which is good enough. And so truly good is the enemy of great because when you’re living with these fuzzy, comfy handcuffs, these aren’t sexy handcuffs. These are just fuzzy handcuffs that you put on yourself and you could easily break.

Anthony: But you choose not to, and I think that’s the hardest prison to break out of is the prison that you put yourself into and you choose not to. And so this brings me back to the idea that started this, which is that the [00:05:00] risk of mediocrity is greater than the risk of failure. The risk of staying where you are, of not pursuing your greatness and not.

Anthony: Tapping into the potential that you have to go and live the story you were put on this planet to live. The risk of not going for it is greater than the risk of going for it and failing. Because at least if you go for it and you fail, you’re at least moving forward. You’re trying, you’re learning, you’re growing and that’s going to set you up for future success because we fail our way to success and that only happens if we take that action.

Anthony: So I encourage you to think about that. Are you settling for a life of mediocrity? Are you settling for good? And is that costing you the potential for great. If it is, I’ll stick around for future episodes cause I think we’re going to try and unpack this. I’m try and lay out a framework, a roadmap, or at least the.

Anthony: I’ll share a little bit of my journey and like what helped me go from that place of this is not what I was [00:06:00] put here to do, to, you know, these days I wake up and I, I feel an immense amount of purpose and driven towards, a mission. And I hope, I want that for you as well. So if this brought you any value, Awesome.

Anthony: That’s really cool to hear. I’m so thankful. do me a favor. If you’re sharing this on social media with somebody that you think we get some value out of it, tag me in it. I’d love to join the conversation. I’d love to meet you guys out there in the digital ecosphere, and as always my friend, stay hyper focused.

Anthony: We’ll see you in the next episode.
