Show Me This, And I’ll Show You What You Actually Value

The Amplified Impact Podcast
October 7th, 2023

I can tell a whole lot about a person just by looking at three things…

Your email inbox, your calendar, and your phone’s home screen. That’s all I would need to see to be able to understand what your values are, and how close you are to achieving your goals.

Your email inbox is ground zero for your daily interactions. Is it a chaotic mess or a well-organized system? Your inbox reflects the systems and processes that can move you closer to your goals.

Your calendar holds the power to reveal what you truly value. Are you prioritizing work or making room for family, health, and personal time?

What does your phone screen look like? Is it a colorful jungle of apps or a streamlined home screen focusing on what truly matters? Simplifying your phone usage can help you take back control.

Let’s dive deep into all of this on today’s episode of Amplified Impact.

Anthony Vicino:

Welcome to Amplified Impact. This is the podcast where we talk about how to build better businesses, invest in real estate, and how to hyper focus on the things that matter most so that we can maximize our return on life. I’m your host, Anthony Vasino, and I’ve written a few bestselling books, built a few seven and eight figure businesses, and currently manage a $70 million real estate portfolio. But the thing I’m most proud of is that I managed to turn my ADHD into a superpower. This podcast is all about the story, stories, lessons, and strategies I wish I had learned sooner in the pursuit of living a life beyond the apex. I’m psyched to have you here. Now let’s go make some amplifying. Yo.

Anthony Vicino:

If you show me your calendar, your email inbox, and let’s say your phone’s home screen, then I think I could, within reason, get pretty close to telling you what are the things that you actually value in life, what are the things that are holding you back and then why you probably aren’t where you want to be. And I can do all that just from looking at these three things your inbox, your calendar, and your home screen. So why is that? And it’s because at its core, these are the things that really control our attention for the most part, right? Your calendar, that’s your time that’s telling me where are you spending your time? What are you scheduling in there? Are you scheduling time to get into the gym for an hour every day? Are you scheduling time to spend meaningful time with loved ones, with family, with your kids? I don’t know if I don’t have kids, but maybe you do. And are you scheduling that in or are you only scheduling in work things? Oh, I have this appointment, I have that appointment, I have this thing, I have that thing. Nothing necessarily wrong with that, but it tells me what you’re prioritizing because I think you either own your schedule or your schedule owns you. And the only way to own your schedule is to sit down and tell your time where you expect it to go. Otherwise it just kind of goes out the window wherever the universe deems worthy at that moment. Because the external world is constantly vying for your attention.

Anthony Vicino:

If you’re not telling it directly where you want it to go and why you want it to go there, it’s going to escape. And so I’m not saying you need to time block your day and be exceptionally precise. But generally if I look at your calendar and I only see work stuff and no family stuff, no health stuff, friends stuff, I can see what you value and that’s maybe you’re in a phase of your life where that is what you value, that can be a very good thing. If you tell me that you want to build your business and you’re working a nine to five right now. But I look on your calendar and I don’t see any time in there blocked off for working on your business. I know you don’t actually want to build your business. It’s a want, but it’s not actually a need. I have to have this.

Anthony Vicino:

It’s not a standard, right? So things on our calendar often tell us where our time is going and therefore the things that we schedule in there are the things that we truly do value. And so that’s number one. Number two is the inbox. When I look at your inbox, the inbox of your email can tell me a whole lot of things. First of all, what kind of mindset you are. If you’re an organized person who is every day hitting inbox zero, if you’re the type of person who has 5000 unread emails in there, if your promotional, your social emails are all going into your general inbox, if you have seven different emails, all come to the same place, and you’re fielding all sorts of crap in there, and you don’t have an organizational system. It tells me a whole lot about the systems and processes you are applying within your life to move towards your goals. Because your inbox really is like ground zero in a lot of ways for the world coming to you and you going to it.

Anthony Vicino:

It’s kind of the nexus of your interactions. And if that thing is a hot mess, there’s no system, no process for organizing it, then your process for moving through your life towards your goals is probably also similar. Now that’s just one level. The next level up might be, hey, I don’t even go into my emails because I have an executive assistant who filters it all. It’s not a good use of my time and energy to look at my emails. They read it all and then we sit down. If there’s anything they can’t handle, they bring it to me. They handle it.

Anthony Vicino:

So now they are the arbiter of everything that’s happening. And that tells me that you value your time above all else and that you realize your highest values that you can bring to the world are probably not by handling your emails, right? So there’s different levels to this. But that tells me very clearly, maybe what’s holding you back from getting to your goals is your systems and your processes of organization. And then if I look at your screen, your home screen on your phone, I can tell a ton. First of all, is it in color? You guys already know grayscale is proven a proven way of making your phone less addictive. It’s just by turning off the color, turning into black and white, it makes it boring, it makes it suck. That’s number one. Now this is a tool that you use instead of it using you, which is like a very important difference.

Anthony Vicino:

Number two, if I look on your home screen, it’s a hodgepodge mess, similar to your inbox. And I can kind of tell you, you probably don’t have a great system for finding things and for moving towards your goals. So if you have a refined system of here’s the three apps that I use here, and this reason, this is the utility, this is my phone, this is my texting, whatever. Like, if you have a process, a system, awesome. That’s step one. Step two is, is it all the apps in the world on your home screen or is it just the most important things? Because again, we’re always trying to apply Pareto’s principle to our life, the 80 20 rule, what are the 20% of inputs that account for 80% of our outputs? And there’s probably only 20% of the apps on your phone that you consistently need to use, whether that’s your email, calendar, texting, WhatsApp, I don’t know, maybe social media apps, if it’s your business. But you need to have a priority system for how do you put that into your phone and then how do you use this thing in a meaningful way? And I cover all of this, by the way, guys, so many different levels to this, to the calendar maintenance, to the inbox maintenance, to the phone maintenance that we break down in the Hyper Focus Masterclass, which was it is a simple system for productivity. It’s really what I’ve been using for a long time to make my phone productive.

Anthony Vicino:

It’s crazy to me when I see people with their inboxes with 5000 emails, because every single day for the last two years, I end the day with inbox zero, meaning I have zero emails in my inbox, and I get hundreds of emails a day. So if I can find a system that allows me to get through all that and get to inbox zero every single day, you can do the same. Full confidence in you. But all that’s broken down in the Hyper Focus Masterclasses is all I’m trying to say. And you can check that out beyond theapex.com hyperfocus. I think we’ve had, man, last I looked, we had over 1800 students. We must be close to 1900 actually, at this point, go through that course, and the feedback has been awesome. So I think if you struggle with focus, overcoming distractions like I do, then that system is potentially very helpful.

Anthony Vicino:

So I hope you go check it out. And if you do, I hope you get a ton of value out of it. So that’s going to do it for me. Guys and gals, I want you thinking hard about those three key nexuses within your life. Your schedule, your inbox, and your home screen. If you can get those three things figured out, then everything in netlin life just starts to become a whole lot easier, especially within your business life. So I wish that for you, above all of all things, I want an easier, better, more streamlined, less chaotic life for you, so that you could focus on the things that actually bring you joy and meaning and purpose. So I hope this episode helped, maybe just move you a step closer to that.

Anthony Vicino:

So that’s going to do it for me, guys and gals. I’ll catch you back here tomorrow. But until then, stay hyper focused, my friends. Hey, guys. I love, love, love that you’re listening to the podcast.
