So, got a DM from a fellow entrepreneur questioning, “Am I doing this right?”

Valid query, right? The thing is, that question never truly goes away.

But guess what? There’s no one “right” way. It’s a myth.

Each of us carves our unique path to success. I’ve built successful businesses using different frameworks.

So, embrace your unique journey.

Yet, here’s the kicker: don’t get too attached to your systems. They might stop serving you. Be ready to evolve.

So, evaluate what’s working for you. If it’s time to let go, do it.

Episode Transcript:

A DM the other day from a young buck who starting his own business. And, you know, I think he’s like six, seven months into it, and he’s asking some great questions. But one of the questions in particular was, am I doing this the right way? Am I doing this right? And he’s just looking for reassurance, because in the world of entrepreneurship, you’re operating in a black box. You’re inside of a silo, and it can. It can feel like you get not getting the feedback that you need. So you’re like, I don’t know, am I this right? Am I completely off base? And you can read books and you can watch videos like this, and you can learn from people who are further ahead of you. But truly, when you’re in the moment and you’re going through the motions, doing the thing, executing, you don’t have a good feedback system to really be able to determine, am I on the right path? Am I smoking weed here? Am I completely off base with what I’m doing? Am I doing this right? That question, honestly, if I’m being completely transparent, as you ascend through the different levels of entrepreneurship, that question never goes away. You’ll forever be asking yourself, am I doing this right? And 99% of the time, you’re going to answer that question.

I don’t think I am. I don’t think I’m doing this right. There has to be a better way. And it’s that question, that answer to that question which drives you, or at least it needs to drive you towards the path of continual improvement, because you’re probably not doing it the best way. And if you believe that you are, then you’re closing off your mind to the possibility of growth and improvement. Anyways, here’s the thing, is, what I have come to realize is that nobody feels like they are doing it the right way. And the reason for that is, it’s simple. There is no right way.

Not at all. The path that I followed to where I am is different than the path you’re probably following or the path that Joe over there followed and the path that Kim followed over here. Right. We can all get to the top of our mountains following different paths, and in fact, you’re probably not going to follow in the exact footsteps of the person who came before you. And on the one hand, it would be nice if there was just one path, one system, one process. You just execute this, this, and this, and you go. But on the other side, I think there’s a lot to be said about the journey and the exploration that the excitement that comes with knowing you don’t have to do it the way that the other person is doing it, that you can do it in your own unique way and put your own unique stamp on it. And I found that really cool.
And I was thinking about this in the terms of, like, I used to say this more frequently, I don’t say it very much anymore, but I think it’s still kind of true, is that people would always ask, what’s the best business book? And the truth is, I have business books that I like more than others, and I think that have been impactful for me. But I have read hundreds of books on business, and each one has a slightly different framework and a slightly different system. And the reality is, I’ve built multiple successful businesses off the back of different frameworks. We built escape off the back of, I would call it lean manufacturing with the Toyota way. Right? And then we built Invictus capital off the back attraction. Which one’s better? Which one’s right? Well. Oh, and going back to escape, actually, we used the four ds of execution. That framework was critical.
Okay, I should probably give that some credit. So we used completely different frameworks and achieved similar amounts of success. Right. So which one was. Right? Which one’s better? Honestly, my stance is that any system applied with diligence on a long enough time frame will probably work. Honestly, as long as it’s a fairly well considered, well thought out game plan, and you execute it diligently and you don’t give up too soon, it’ll probably work. It’s the idea that an idiot with a plan can beat a genius without one. There’s a lot of truth in that, and I find it humbling, I guess, in the sense that in the world of business, anything can really work.
If you just keep doing the thing and keep applying and keep learning and iterating and improving on each round of the merrygo. But the other side of this, then, is not to get too married to your systems. Because here’s the reality, is that as you grow and you expand, not just as a business, but as an individual, as a human, the systems that worked for you yesterday might stop working. Suddenly. The idea that what got us here won’t get us there, that’s true in all domains of life. And sometimes we go through these seasons and these periods of growth and rapid development again, both in business and in our personal life. And you need to be able to reassess what has helped you get to where you are. But does it still serve you do you need to continue clinging to that system and applying it, or is it time for a shift, a change? Because there is no right way.
There’s only the way that works for you. And in my experience, that is constantly evolving. And I used to feel bad about this, specifically in the context of my personal life, where I would create these structures, these routines, these habits, and I’d get really locked into them. And if you watch enough of my content over the last three to four years, you’ll see, like, at different periods, I’m doing different things, I have different processes that I’m like, this is the way. This is what’s working for me. And then when it stops working, I would feel bad. I would feel bad that somehow I had failed the system. Rather than recognizing that I had grown, I had changed and that the system no longer served me.
And as an extension, I needed to evolve the system. I needed to go back and rework it. And it took me a really long time to learn that lesson. And truthfully, I spent a couple of years in the middle of my journey, beyond the fact where I had that initial few years of success. There was that middle period where I kept replicating the systems that got me the initial bit of success, but it wasn’t moving me forward anymore. And so I was doing all sorts of things. I was, like, doing my 05:00 a.m. Wake ups, and I was doing my gratitude journals and my hour of meditation.
I was doing all of this stuff that had served me so incredibly well in one season of my life. And it was all falling short. It was no longer moving the needle in a meaningful way. And it took me a solid four to five, six months of going through the motions and executing the system mindlessly without really seeing the results that I finally realized I needed to make some changes, I needed to cut some things out, and I reworked the system, and suddenly I was like, you know what? Instead of waking up at 05:00 a.m. I’m going to start letting my body sleep. Instead of doing my gratitude and just going through the motion and checking the box, I’m going to adopt different systems and processes, right? And suddenly I started growing again, and I felt that pursuit, that pull towards my greatest self. And I was like, oh, this is what I was missing. This is the right system.
No, this is the right system for me in that moment, right? Because the truth is, there is no right way. There’s just what works for you. And that’s constantly evolving. So I encourage you to evaluate what are you doing in your life? Is it still serving you? If it’s not, don’t be afraid to let it go, to cut it loose. The other side of that is, don’t cut things out too soon before you can definitively say, like you’ve put in the right amount of effort. How do you know when you put in the right amount of effort? Well, hell, that’s a really tough question to answer. I don’t got anything for you there but good luck, right? Everybody’s different, so you have to figure that out for yourself. And I got no good answers.

Sorry. Anyways, that’s going to do it for me, guys. I appreciate you as always. Thank you so much. And if you get a chance, actually while you’re here, could you just do me a favor?
