“Even if you’re not just a young buck fresh out of college, regardless of where you are on your journey, the mindset that you’re not as valuable as you could be is a mindset that will serve you well regardless of where you are on the path.”

Alright, listen up, all you young whippersnappers. If you’re in college or you’re fresh out of college, I got some harsh, harsh truth for you, some harsh reality, which is that nobody wants to hire you. Nobody wants you. You’re, you’re not, you’re not desired out there in the workplace. And on the surface, this is a bummer, right? You just went to school and spent four years getting your degree and getting educated and like now you’re going out into the real world and you’re having to settle for entry level jobs that don’t pay you very much and the people don’t treat you very well and all this jazz, right, and it can make you feel like, well, what the hell? I’m not getting what I was promised out of this whole equation. But the truth is that the people you actually want to work for, the people who are rock stars, badasses at what they do, they probably don’t really want to work with you. And the reason is that you don’t have at this point in your journey any meaningful skills, experience or resources that you could bring to the table, which means that you probably can’t actually help them in their operations in any sort of meaningful way. And as a result, they’re going to be spending most of their time just potty training you.
Right? And I think a lot of young people myself, I’m one of these people. If I’m sounding like I’m preaching to you, I’m not. I’m preaching to younger Anthony because I had so much ego, I had such a chip on my shoulder. I had this belief that I was awesome, the badass, and everybody just didn’t recognize my genius and my ability and my talent, and that was their fault. I’m preaching to myself. But if you can just park your ego and realize that you’re not worth very much at this point in your journey, even though you went to school and that got that degree, the truth is, all you really did by going to college and getting your degree, in most cases, unless you went to be a doctor or a lawyer or whatever, like a highly specialized trade, is that you simply have proven that you have what it takes to show up consistently, follow the rules and get a degree. And that is valuable. That is a certain amount of signal that’s helpful, but that is not anything that’s going to automatically catapult you to the top of anybody’s list of like, I want to work with that person and this is important because you want to work with those badasses who are going to probably be not predisposed to wanting to work with you.
Right? And that can be very frustrating. But it’s as like, one of my favorite stories of all time on this topic is Warren Buffett. When he was young, this was almost 80, 90 years ago, 80 years ago. He goes to Benjamin Graham, who is a legend in the investing world at that time, he was the Warren Buffett of his time. Warren goes to him and he says, I will work for you for free. And Benjamin Graham looks at Warren Buffett, who would go on to be the wealthiest man in the world at one point, and he said this, even at free, you’re overpriced, man. That’s brutal. Even at the price of free, you are overpriced.
It’s brutal. So here’s what this means, is that you are going to come into the workforce, you’re going to get into this life. And I’m not saying that you should go out and start a business right away. I actually did a video on this recently about how I think if you wanted to maximize your likelihood of getting wealthy by the time you turn 30 or 35, that the first step is actually to go get a job, to go learn, not to worry about earning. You’re not in your earning phase yet. You’re in your learning phase. And you need to go surround yourself with the badasses in your domain that are going to help you get as much skill and knowledge in as condensed a period of time as possible. That should be your goal.
And wherever you end up getting your foot in the door, your only objective now is to just make yourself as valuable as possible to the people around you. In the beginning, I’m going to give you some ideas. I’m going to give you three basic ways to improve your value to the company, and I’m going to give you three more advanced things that you should work on. So the basics is learn how to communicate well. That’s in writing. That’s in your emails. Learn how to send a good email. Truly, that is a rare skill.
Most people suck at sending good emails. Send good text messages, good slack messages. Learn how to communicate effectively in person. The ability to communicate an idea persuasively with impact in an engaging way. It’s one of the best ways to differentiate yourself, even if you’re no smarter or better or more skilled than anybody else in your cohort. Just the ability to communicate better will put you so much further ahead. The second thing I want you to work on is to learn how to work hard and you don’t know how to work hard yet. But here’s the thing.
You need to be the first one in and the last one out. You can’t expect to do what everybody else does and get ahead because they’re already ahead of you. So if you simply match their effort, they will stay ahead of you. This is the time that you have to put in the reps, and you have to work long and hard to bridge that gap between where you’re trying to go and who you are in this moment, because if you don’t, everybody else will continue to outpace you. All right, the third skill, basic skill that I want you to focus on is how to get shit done. Learn how to focus. Learn time management. Learn how to execute.
Truly, the ability to take a project from beginning to completion in a condensed period of time is a very rare skill. A lot of people don’t have it. A lot of people get distracted, they get unfocused. They lose the thread at some point, and then the project takes longer than expected. If you can master the skill of getting shit done, you will rise through the ranks. I guarantee it. All right, here’s three more advanced skills to start working on. Number one, how to lead people.
If you can lead people, you can accomplish anything in life, because you might not have all the skills to do a thing, but if you can gather the troops and you can motivate and you can persuade them and you can move them to take action in your name, then you could do anything. You could build a bridge, even though you have no idea. You’re not an architect, you’re not an engineer. You can lead those people to do the thing. So leading is a very, very valuable skill. It’s very hard to learn. And in my experience, the only way to do it is in the crucible of the arena, actually leading people. Number two, learn how to identify opportunities.
The ability to see what’s in front of you that everybody else misses. That is a very rare skill, and it takes time, and it takes taste, and it takes experience. And so you do not have that at the moment. You do not have the ability to identify truly good opportunities yet. And so spend your time with the top people in your company that you can surround yourself with who do have this ability. And learn through osmosis. That is one of the most valuable skills I can think of, is learn how to identify opportunities. And the corollary of this is our third skill, which is the skill of judgment.
And this know, as Naval ravikant says, judgment in an agent of infinite leverage. Judgment is the most important skill. I did a couple of videos on how to develop judgment. So go to the YouTube channel, the main channel. Anthony Vasino, go check those videos out on how to make a decision, how to think strategically. That was one of my favorite videos. Yet it did. Absolutely.
It’s the worst performing video on the channel yet. It’s the video that I have found the most entertaining, or not the most entertaining, but the most valuable and most unique. It’s called the art of thinking strategically. Go check that out if you want to learn how to develop judgment. Okay, that was my rant. Rant over. But hey, listen up, guys. Even if you’re not just a young buck fresh out of college, regardless of where you are on your journey, the mindset that you’re not as valuable as you could be is a mindset that will serve you well regardless of where you are on the path.
It’s something that I remind myself every day is that I am not where I want to be because I am not valuable enough yet to the world. And so I continually need to level up and keep refining and working on how to communicate, how to work hard, how to get shit done, how to lead, how to identify opportunities, and how to express good judgment. So I hope this serves you very, very well in your own journey. As always, thank you so much for being here, guys. I’ll catch you in the next episode.
