Anthony Vicino:
What’s up, everybody? Welcome back to the podcast. It is a beautiful eleven degree fahrenheit Monday morning and I just wanted to share with you an activity that I go through not every week, but most weeks that I find very, very helpful. And it ties into this idea of the three to free. So if you’re aware of my productivity system or the hyper focus productivity system as it is, I have a process where each day I sit down and I determine what’s it look like to win the day. Because this is like the easiest thing, the easiest way to win the day is to first define what that looks like. And two, because you get to define it, you can make it as easy as you want. And for me, I sit down every morning and I define what winning that particular day looks like. And the way that I write this out is through the lens of my three to free, my five to thrive and my two to do.
Anthony Vicino:
So the three to free is what are the three activities that if I did nothing else for the entire day, if I could check those boxes, that it would signify a win? Like, those are big, meaningful, big impactful activities. Those are my three to three. The five to thrive are your five activities or the five big goals that you have, say for the month or for the quarter. So they’re larger, longer range targets that you’re triangulating towards. And ideally the three to free every single day should be moving you towards accomplishing those five to thrive. And then your two to do is just the two random to do tasks like doing the laundry, walking the dog, that have to get done for life to move forward, but that aren’t necessarily going to be like the really big meaningful things that are impactful in the grand scheme of life. Okay? So that’s the framework. What I do on a weekly basis, or I try to.
Anthony Vicino:
I don’t always do it, but seeing as how it is a Monday morning and I just completed it, I find it very, very helpful to take that idea of the three to free and apply it to the week and just say, this week. What does it look like if I were to win this week? And our tendency, I think, is just to fill up our list with a ton of stuff. Because to do lists are like hydra. The more you cut off their heads, the more keep popping back up. And so a lot of us just kind of feel like we’re on this endless hamster wheel. It’s just spinning, spinning, spinning ever faster like you’re checking off to do’s. But every time you do, another one pops up to take its place. And so it’s not about the length of the list, it’s about the quality.
Anthony Vicino:
And to make it as high quality as possible, I tried to narrow down what are my three big goals this week? If I was to move these projects forward or accomplish these tasks, that would be a fantastic week. And I’m a big fan of just that idea that less is more or to live a tranquil life filled with meaning and fulfillment. As Marcus Aurelia says, do less, but better. And so what are those three things this week? Seeing as how it’s a Monday, you might be listening to this later in the week. That’s okay. But take this moment just to reflect. If you were to get nothing else done this week except for three things, just three things that would move the needle most meaningfully towards your goals, what would those three things be? And then write them down and then bake time into your calendar each day through the activity of time blocking to say, this is when I’m going to work on this activity and move the ball forward. Do that, and then in very short order, you’re going to start noticing some really wicked gains.
