Give Yourself Permission To Do THIS
The Amplified Impact Podcast
August 31st, 2023
Today, let’s dive into a topic that’s been bugging me – the “hustle culture” that’s all over social media.
I recently stumbled upon a tweet that claimed getting injured in a workout is better than no workout at all.
While I get the intention, it completely misses the mark on the importance of rest and balance.
Here’s the thing: overworking ourselves, constantly grinding, can lead to burnout and even injury.
We often see polished versions of people on social media, not the days they struggle to even get out of bed.
I’ve been there. I used to believe that pushing through fatigue was the way to success.
But then I suffered a serious injury, and it taught me a vital lesson…you don’t need to overwork yourself to be successful.
Hustle culture ignores this, pushing us to feel guilty for taking a break.
The secret is creating balance.
So, the next time you see someone glorifying constant hustle, know that it’s okay to take care of yourself and pace your efforts.

Anthony Vicino:
So I just came across a tweet that got me really riled up, got me kind of angry, actually. And I wanted to talk about it real quickly because what this person was saying in this tweet usually I don’t get too riled up about things that I see on social media, but this one upset me because it is such a pervasive message that I see espoused by so many entrepreneurs and so many gurus that you see online saying, like, to be the best version of yourself, to be the greatest, to win this game of life, you need to go, go and hustle, hustle, hustle. And if you’ve listened to this podcast any amount of time, you know I’m very against hustle culture. As a general principle, I believe you have to have the ability to work hard and most definitely being the best at anything that you want to be the best at in life. It’s going to require a lot of hard work, but I think it needs to be managed. We need to find the balance between just burning the midnight oil and burning ourselves out or grinding and then feeling terrible about the fact that maybe we’re not grinding as hard as we think we should be. Because what we see on social media is people on up on a pedestal and showing the absolute best versions of themselves. And there’s no way that we can live up to that on the day to day.
Anthony Vicino:
You wake up on a Monday and sometimes you just don’t have very much energy. You slept like shit. You ate like poop the day before. Maybe you worked out really hard. Maybe Sunday was actually a fantastic day, but you’re just a little hungover from all the activities, everything that you put in. And Monday is just your dragon ass. This happens. Humans work in cycles.
Anthony Vicino:
There’s good days and there’s bad days. And the sooner you get to the point in your journey where you realize it’s okay to have bad days, the better off you’re going to be. And this I’m sharing from personal experience because it’s something I’ve struggled with so much over the years and I want to share it with you here. This tweet that I saw from this gentleman, while well meaning, I think is completely off base. He was effectively saying this is word for word of what he said. He said, getting injured in a workout is better than no workout. Getting injured in a workout is better than no workout. And this is clearly coming from some young guy who’s never seriously injured himself.
Anthony Vicino:
Like, I slipped a disc in my back a couple of years ago. I was probably 35, 36. I was out rock climbing. It was the first time I had ever seriously injured myself in a way where the pain stayed with me for more than a week, which is remarkable, truly, given how active and impact driven my life has been for me. To never get seriously injured somehow is a miracle. But it finally caught up with me. Universe got me and I slipped a disc in my back while out rock climbing and it caused so much damage to my psyche, to my body. I was in chronic pain every single day for the next six months to the point where I would go into the emergency room in the middle of the night because laying down was causing me so much pain.
Anthony Vicino:
I thought I was going to have a nervous breakdown. It was excruciating. Not only that, but then the effect that it had on me and my mental health because I couldn’t work out, I could barely move, I could barely function during that period of time. Then to be able to see my muscles starting to atrophy on that side of my body because I wasn’t able to be active and use my arm in any kind of way, it was really doing massive damage to my psyche. And so I want to share with you one. When it comes to the gym, staying healthy is the key to staying healthy. And sometimes that means taking rest. There is no shame in that.
Anthony Vicino:
And I mentioned that last part. There’s no shame in this because the reason a lot of times take the rest that we know we need or we think that we might deserve is because we feel this guilt, this pressure, the social media pressure of like, well, if I’m not in the gym every single day putting in the work, then I’m slacking, right? And then we buy into this idea that no pain, no gain. Well, some pain is bad and some pain is good. And we need to avoid the bad pain because you push too far and your body does have limits, you’re going to go too far. And this isn’t just about going into the gym. This is about all areas of life. This is about how we work in our businesses, on our relationships, whatever we go at, we need to find the off switch. And for a lot of us, we know where the off switch is, but we don’t give ourselves the permission to flip that switch because there’s so much guilt and shame associated with it.
Anthony Vicino:
And I know there was a lot of that for me throughout the years. But truly, having competed in sports at the highest level, having competed in entrepreneurship at the highest level, one of the things I’ve come to realize is that the only goal, the thing that separates the people who are wildly successful like the top of the top. The gold medalists in the Olympics from everybody else is those gold medalists, they never interrupt the compounding interest of going in the and putting in the work. And the way that you avoid interrupting that compounding interest isn’t by skipping a gym day or two, it’s by getting injured. Injury is what’s going to ruin the compounding interest. So I wanted to share this with you because maybe you’re out there, you’re looking at Instagram. You’re on Twitter. You’re watching the people who are out there grinding every single day.
Anthony Vicino:
And you’re like, I just can’t keep up. What’s wrong with me? There’s nothing wrong with you. They’re just giving you an idealized version of reality. It’s not accurate, and it’s okay to live in accordance with what your body needs. That’s the number one thing I want you to take away from this is do what is best for you. Become a student of your body. Pay attention to it. Give it the nourishment, the rest of recovery that it needs so that you can push when the time comes to push.
Anthony Vicino:
I hope this brings you some value. Guys and gals, I appreciate you, as always, for being here. I’ll catch you in the next episode. Until then, stay hyper focused, my friend.
