The Amplified Impact Podcast
March 18th, 2023
The other day I was on twitter, and got into a heated discussion with a CPA… and it all reminded me of why people don’t like CPA’s in the first place.
No offense to any of you all who are CPA’s…
But after that discussion, I tweeted out 3 things that CPA’s could do to increase their business.
And then I realized that these 3 things really apply to any business. So if you’re an expert at something, here are 3 things you can do to make you more money.

If You’re An Expert
[00:00:00] Anthony: What is up everybody? Welcome back to the podcast. As always. I am excited to have you here. I was really frustrated the other day on Twitter. There was this conversation that was occurring between, um, this CPA and myself, I guess . He, he made a post and it was an interesting, it was an interesting tweet. Um, and I went into the comments to ask a.
and the, the interaction that I had with him and this other CPA who who popped into the conversation reminded me of why. People hate CPAs so much. And so then like coming off this conversation, I made a tweet about, you know, hey CPAs, if you want more business, do this. And I gave three tips for, for things, uh, that they should be doing differently to not leave people feeling like I hate you.
And it occurred to me. These three things that you can do, uh, to make more, [00:01:00] do more business and to stand out in your field. It’s not just for CPAs, it’s actually for any expert in any industry, whether like, regardless of what you’re doing. And so I’m gonna share these with you, but the thing that was really, I.
Well, actually, I’ll just get into him and I’ll, I’ll break down what was, what the, the conversation that I was having with him and why it was, was so, so annoying. So, number one, the number one thing that you gotta do if you’re an expert and you wanna make more money is that you need to learn how to speak human.
Okay? So the example that I gave this guy was, your average entrepreneur does not speak tax code. You are the translator. It is your job to translate this into. English into human . So regardless of what it’s, whether you’re a CPA or you’re a lawyer, like your job is to speak this thing that you have a very nuanced, detailed understanding of, and you have to communicate it to a person who’s never heard these terms, never heard the, the context, and they’re completely lost.[00:02:00]
You have to, you have to translate it for them. That’s your job. And I see this really prevalent within CPAs where they’ll throw out all these different terms and, and it’s like, Hey, I don’t understand what you’re talking about. Like, it’s, it’s not even just lingo. It’s like the context. I just completely lack it.
So that’s number one. Speak human. And I, and I’ll tell you what, like if you, if you’re an expert in some field and you master the art of simplifying what you’re talking about, so. Um, your average person in the street understands it like you are going to always be in business. I can guarantee that. Number two, this, uh, I guess I just gave this one.
Make it simple. , okay. Um, assume your average person has the intelligence of a six year old, because a, a lot of them do, myself included. So like, make it really simple. There’s no need to impress us with your. , your complex knowledge of the, the domain. I assume you know this, I assume you have the ability to talk complexity, but [00:03:00] do you understand it well enough that you can simplify it and explain it to a child?
If you don’t, then you don’t really understand it. Um, not only that, but you’re gonna lose my business because at the end of the day, the confused mind says no. And the reason most of us hate CPAs is that we go into the con conversation not knowing what we don’t know, and then we come out of. fearing.
There’s even more we don’t know that we don’t know. We, we just feel even more lost because it wasn’t simple and it wasn’t communicated to us as, as a human . And that’s been my experience with CPAs at least where I’m like, I go into it and I’m like, listen, I, I don’t know what I don’t know. I need you to guide me to hold my hand to, to, to explain this in a way that I, as a stupid layman can get.
Which leads me to the third thing that if you’re an expert and you want to get more business, do not ever say, it depends. This is literally never a helpful answer for somebody who is [00:04:00] confused. They don’t know what to say, like they don’t know what questions to ask. Saying it depends, and then going into more complex reasons of why.
It depends first of. lawyers and CPAs love to say it depends because they live in a world of gray and there’s complexity and context that’s always needed and they’re trying to cover their ass and listen, it’s not a helpful answer because we know it depends. We know that there’s probably not just one right answer.
You don’t need to tell us that. What you need to tell us is what are the options? Break ’em down. Stupid simple in human ease so I can understand it. And then I’m coming to you for your judgment and your wisdom and your expertise. Help me make the best decision. Don’t just leave it to me. and say like, here are your options.
Go for it. When I’m like, Hey, what do you think I should do given my situation? Actually give me an opinion through the lens of my context. That’s what I’m paying for. That’s what I, that’s the help that I [00:05:00] need. That’s why we come to experts. . And I think if you do those three things, if you learn to speak human, if you make whatever it is that you’re an expert in, simple so that you can explain it to a child and you actually give people your opinions and you actually give people like some direction you’re gonna.
You’re gonna carve out a, a niche for yourself and you’re just gonna be drowning in business. So listen up, CPAs, that’s the, that’s the magic right there. If you’re a lawyer, this is the magic for you as well. I don’t care what you’re doing in life. If you can speak human, make it simple and, and give context and like help give opinions that lead people towards their desired end state.
You are gonna be a rockstar. So I hope this brought you a little bit of value. Uh, if it did, do me a favor, just drop a review. If it didn’t, maybe don’t drop a review. Just maybe just come back tomorrow and gimme another shot, and we’ll, we’ll try to bring you some value in that one. But until then, stay happy.
