Today I wanted to talk about something that’s been on my mind lately… Haters.

As content creators or entrepreneurs, we all face the reality of dealing with haters. They might not say it outright, but they can still hold us back with their subtle, passive-aggressive comments.

But here’s the thing, if we let the haters get to us, they win… We can’t let them stop us from pursuing our dreams and reaching our full potential. It’s natural to feel hurt and discouraged when faced with negativity, but we have to remember that our purpose in life is greater than the hate we feel.

As Brad Pitt said in Bullet Train…”hurt people hurt people”, and I truly believe that.

How are you dealing with haters right now?

TWEETABLE QUOTE:

“In the world of social media and online where it’s so anonymous and it’s so easy to be a dick because there’s no consequences, there’s no face behind it. People don’t know you. They can’t hold you accountable. It’s so easy sometimes just to lash out with that. But then when you take the time to respond and show them love, this is typically what you get people going, you know what I value? You seeing me and hearing me, and I realize that this isn’t how I wanted to represent myself.” – Anthony Vicino

Episode Transcript:

Hey, what’s up everybody? Welcome back to the podcast. Today I want to talk about one of the harsh realities of being a content creator or being an entrepreneur or being a person who is not content with the status quo, with going through life, just following the American dream, being on the path that everybody tells you is the normal path, the thing that you should do the the thing that we all have.

Struggle against, um, on our path towards greatness, which is there’s gonna be haters, there’s gonna be haters along the way, and if you let them, the haters will stop you from doing anything of value, of moving towards anything in life that is worth having because haters, deep down, They don’t like you pursuing your greatness.

They don’t like you moving towards your highest being because it makes them reflect on who they are and where they are in life. And it makes them own the fact that they’re maybe not satisfied with that. And so, you know, it’s natural human tendency to lash out at things that make us uncomfortable to the things that make us confront our inadequacies or feelings of, of short.

And so there’s gonna be people that are going to hate you as you’re putting out content in the world, as you’re building your business, as you’re doing anything to improve yourself, whether that’s, you know, in your relationships and your your health. And one of the hardest things for me in my journey, in the beginning when I first started writing science fiction books, I had to come to terms with the.

A lot of the people who are quote unquote haters and, and you know, it’s possible to be a hater without ever actually being like, expressing that hate and like saying like, you suck. Or, you know, it’s the people who are not actively sabotaging you necessarily, but they are not pushing you forward in life.

You know, they’re friends and family and members who, like, they’re holding you back through. Subtle, passive aggressive digs and little comments that they make about, oh, how’s that little, that little business going? How’s, how’s the, that thing, you know? And they kind of, it’s patronizing almost, right? And that’s a form of hate too, because you feel it as the creator.

You go, oh, that’s my baby, and you’re calling it this little thing, and that hurts, right? So they might not mean it as like pure hate, but that’s how you’ll interpret it. And a lot. A lot of people I know this stops them from ever taking action. Like the fear of what this nebulous crowd of haters is gonna think about what they’re doing and like, oh no, what if somebody thinks I’m stupid?

I put out this content and I get these hateful replies from people who are just trying to tear you down. And then the truth is, there are going to be those people there. There’s gonna be a lot of ’em. And the more successful you are, the the more hate you’re. That’s just the reality of the situation. And so you can either let that stop you from ever starting, which is like a lot of people allow that to be the thing that stops ’em from ever even getting into the game.

Or you can say that the, the thing that I’m moving towards, the purpose that I have in life is greater than the hate that I feel or the hate that the people feel towards me and that I will make a positive impact and that there will be people who value what I do and they will love it. And, and, and that will be.

And those are the people that I create, create for, and I create for myself and not for the, the haters. And, and I share this because it’s top of mind today. Um, I got a comment. This is interesting. I get a lot of hate comments. I also get guys, I get 99% of the comments that I get on social media and I get a lot of them are positive.

In fact, on, on YouTube, I can see the analytics of how many people, you know, like versus dislike a video. And across the channel, across 2 million views of all of our videos. Our channel wide average for likes is 98%. 98% of people like what we’re doing. 2% hate it. And those 2%, if you let them, they will pull you down.

And I have a policy where if you are a hater or if you are a troll, I am going to annoy the hell out of you with kind. Because it’s the last thing the trolls really want. They don’t, they want to get under your skin. And when you show them that it doesn’t work, that when you show them love and appreciation, it, nothing bothers them more.

So that’s number one. That’s a lot of fun, is like to annoy trolls with love. And the way this usually works is a troll will say something very mean and hurtful in the comments section. And I will just reply to him. I appreciate you taking the time to check out the video nonetheless. Good luck on your journey, brother.

I appreciate. Truly, and I truly feel that like, because I saw this movie with Brad Pitt a while back called Bullet Train and he, there’s the best line in this movie. He goes, hurt people. Hurt people. And I thought that was just so brilliant. Hurt people. Hurt people. And it’s true, like the people who are lashing out with hate.

They’re hurt, they’re hurting inside. They’re not content with who they are. They hate who they are. Probably they hate this life that they’re living and they want others to feel that too because misery love company. And so if you can come at it from that perspective and realize, man, this person’s struggling, and if you can, you can reach out to them with love and like genuinely like, Hey, I do appreciate you checking out this video.

I appreciate it. Even if I don’t agree with you, even if you’re being a dick to me, like I do appreciate you at least taking the time to, to watch it, to leave this comment. Thank you. I kid you not guys, the number of times that I’ve done that and I reply to those people with love, the number of times that they come back and say, what I’m about to read to you right now is the majority of the time.

Okay, so this comment, this guy’s name’s Rob. He had left kind of a snarky comment in the YouTube comments and I responded, would love and he. This is great stuff. Reading my message again, I realized that I sounded like an asshole and I didn’t intend for that. You handled it very graciously and I’m sorry for coming off like that.

You have a new subscriber now. Thanks for your insights and congrats on your success. Guys, when you respond to hate with love, this is more often than not, what happens. People go, oh my God, you saw me. In the world of social media and online where it’s so anonymous and it’s so easy to be a dick because there’s no consequences, there’s no face behind it.

People don’t know you. They can’t hold you accountable. It’s so easy sometimes just to lash out with that. But then when you take the time to respond and show them love, this is typically what you get people going, you know what I value? You seeing me and hearing me, and I realize that this isn’t how I wanted to represent myself.

And so the message here is that people that do. End up doing good. So if hurt people, hurt people, people that do good, do good. And so I want you to think about that one. If you’re on the fence about wanting to create content or build a business or do whatever the thing is, like move towards that dream that you have for your life and you’re afraid to do it because of what others will think.

You’re afraid of the hate, you’re afraid of the comments. Understand that they’re gonna come and that the endeavor that you’re considering embarking on is still worth it despite the hate. So that’s number one. Number two is when you do receive that hate, do not let it eat you up. Do not let it deter you.

Just respond to it with love and move on. Realizing that hurt people, hurt people, and people that do good, do good. So I hope this brought you guys some value. I’m psyched to have you here. Thank you so much for giving me a piece of your time. I truly, truly value it and I’ll see you guys back here tomorrow.

But until then, you better stay hyper-focused, my friend.
