My Conversation with a Troll
The Amplified Impact Podcast
February 23th, 2023
Are you tired of dealing with trolls on social media?
In this episode of Amplified Impact, Anthony talks about the two types of trolls he encounters online.
The first type of troll is unhappy and discontent, and they want to bring others down to their level.
The second type is well-meaning and wants to defend the ignorant masses against hypocrisy and stupidity.
Anthony believes that although it’s good to call out people who take advantage of others, doing so through comments is not helpful. Instead, people should create content that educates and serves the masses.
Anthony shares his experience with being trolled on one of his most popular YouTube videos, where he talks about his journey from $80,000 in debt to being a millionaire in three years.
As he became more successful, he received negative comments from people who shared their stories of struggles and difficulties.
Anthony encourages people to shift their perspectives and not tear others down but instead create content that educates and serves the masses.

“One of the things about being at rock bottom that I’ve observed over the years of personally having been there, and also working with people who have been there is that people who have a piece of their story where they overcame and got out of rock bottom go on to massive success.” – Anthony Vicino

Episode Transcript:
Anthony: [00:00:00] What is up? All you beautiful people. Welcome back to the podcast. Today I want to talk about something I try not to give a lot of attention to. I try not to give a lot of bandwidth to these people, but today we’re gonna talk about trolls, trolls. You know, I think they fall into two camps, two categories of people.
Anthony: One are the people who are just so discontent and unhappy in life that they’re going out there and, and just trying to make everybody else as unhappy as possible. So they go out, you know, they take the social media and they leave those mean hateful comments, and they’re just trying to bring everybody else down to their level.
Anthony: That’s one classification of patrol. , the other type of troll is a little bit more well-meaning I think they don’t necessarily take to the comments thinking, man, my life sucks. I’m gonna try and bring everybody else down. And yet that’s kind of what they end up doing. They just kind of bring down everybody else around them, and they kind of do it unintentionally.
Anthony: They think they’re, they’re almost like white knighting and defending the honor. The ignorant masses to people who can’t defend themselves. And so they have to be the voice of reason. The person [00:01:00] that takes a stand, a stand against hypocrisy and stupidity and, and, and, uh, charlatans and all that stuff. And you know, to some degree I think that’s, A good thing.
Anthony: Like there are those people out there in the world on social media who are definitely taking advantage of people. They’re putting out crappy content and yeah, they should be called out. Um, I don’t know if the comments are really the best place to do that. I don’t think it’s helpful. I think if you really want to make an impact on the world and change how people think about these things, that you do it.
Anthony: You do it by creating. I think that’s the way if you really, if you’re that second type of troll that like is really well-meaning and you’re just trying to, to help people and you take the social media and you create your content to, and, and that’s kind of what I’ve been doing a little bit at times with, uh, a little bit of my content, especially on YouTube.
Anthony: I did a video a while back called How Young YouTube Millionaires Lie to You. And the whole goal of that video was not to like poo poo the young YouTube millionaires or anything like that. It was kind of a clickbait [00:02:00] title. Title. But the goal was really to, to share some, some insights about how people can manipulate you on social media through.
Anthony: You know, presenting different accolades or sharing different types of metrics and numbers, like, oh, I’m a millionaire, and like, what’s that actually mean? Or, I built a seven figure business, like what’s that actually mean? And so I did that video as an attempt to be like, you know what, there are people out there who are taking advantage here.
Anthony: Here’s some content that will hopefully educate and serve the masses. So I think that’s the way if you, if you really disagree with what people are, Don’t just take to their comments and poo poo on them. I think that this doesn’t do anything. You just, you’re just tearing down other people. And I don’t think that’s a good way to go through life.
Anthony: But this one comment came through the other day and for whatever reason, it just, like, it hit me in the spot where I’m like, you know what? This, I, I need to address this. I need to talk about this because a lot of people think this way. And so just by unpacking, you know, this person’s complaints and, um, addressing it, I.
Anthony: Maybe it might help you, maybe if you’re in [00:03:00] this position where you kind of think this similar way can help you shift your perspective. Or if you’re on the receiving end of being like trolled by these people and they’re like tearing you down with similar comments and things like that, as you start to become more successful, because as you start to become more successful, you know the, what do they say?
Anthony: The, the tall poppy gets the blade or. , the squeaky wheel gets the grease, the tall nail gets the hammer. I don’t, I don’t know. So like as you start to succeed more, it becomes an easier and easier target for people to try and tear you down. So this guy, you know, on one of my videos, You know, one of my most popular videos on YouTube has like a million views at this point.
Anthony: The, um, the whole premise was just sharing like my story, my journey from being $80,000 in debt to a millionaire in three, in the span of three years. And it is, it is not really so much about like, Hey, look how awesome I am, but more about like the struggles and the journeys that I had along the way, and specifically the steps I took to kind of to write the ship and turn my life a bit and turn around.
Anthony: And you know, on those types of videos when you start talking about like, oh look, I’m successful, I’ve made all this money. Like people come outta the woodworks and [00:04:00] then, you know, they start to share their stories about how like, life is very difficult and they’re in these financial hardships and you know, if just, if you just gave them a little bit of money, um, you know, it would change their life.
Anthony: And this guy was in that, that camp. He said, his comment was this, he. Uh, . Somebody asked for some money effectively in the comments. They’re like, Hey, give this guy some money. Like, he’s struggling. You should help him out. You have all this money, you don’t need it. And you know, I, I told him, sorry, I can’t do that.
Anthony: You know, I, I’m trying to help in my own way, but I’m not gonna do that through financial assistance. And this other guy chimed in. He goes, yeah, you’re sorry. Doesn’t help much. The least you could do is cut ’em a piece of your million dollars asshole. And I was like, oh, that’s hurtful. I’m an asshole. But here’s the thing, there’s, there’s a couple of things that I wanna unpack here because there’s a certain, there’s some frameworks, some perspectives that are helpful to see the world through.
Anthony: Number one, I believe deep down that money is a tool. It’s a very dangerous tool. It’s also a very powerful tool. Like if you know how to use it, if you know how to wield it, then [00:05:00] you can do, uh, remarkable things with it. But if you don’t, it can destroy. Far faster than not having money. And so in a lot of these cases, when people are asking for money, they think that the lack of money is their problem and it’s not.
Anthony: The lack of money is not the problem. The problem is that you lack the skills and the ability to go out there to get money. Because if you had the second thing, you would never need to, you would never find yourself needing money. Right. If I give you money, but I don’t give you the, the skills, the resources, the, the knowledge of how to use that money or how to get more of it, then it’s just bandaid.
Anthony: It’s just treating the symptom, but not actually getting to the root. Cause of the issue. And so one, throwing money at people doesn’t solve the problem because if you don’t know how to wield this tool, the chances are you’re gonna hurt yourself with it. And so that’s number one. Number two is I take umbridge with the idea that I’m not doing enough to try and help these people who, you know, they just need a little bit of money.
Anthony: You know, $10,000 could be very transformative [00:06:00] for them in their lives. And I, I totally get that. But the thing is, I look at it through two lenses. One is if I offered you a million dollars in exchange for the fact that you only get to live for another week, like I’ll give you a million dollars, but you only get to live for one more week, would you take the money?
Anthony: The answer is no. Like of course not. Like there’s no amount of money in the world that’s worth just getting to live for another week. Unless you’re terminal and you only have a day and you’re like, hell yeah, gimme that million dollars. I’ll take a whole week. Generally though we recognize that time is far more valuable than money because you can’t get your time back.
Anthony: There’s an infinite, infinite supply of money, but like once your time’s up you, you don’t get more of it. And so most people are trading their time for money, you know, and the short term. But like if I had to like put it to you and say, would you trade the rest of your life? And all you get is one week left and I’ll give you a million dollars, would you take it?
Anthony: The answer is no. Okay. So then the second thing to think about is, would you rather have the skills? Of a millionaire or just have a million dollars. And [00:07:00] the answer here is pretty obvious. When you think about the fact that having the skills of a millionaire is far more valuable, far, far, far more valuable because you can use those skills into perpetuity to go and make way more than a million dollars, right?
Anthony: Like once you know how to make the money, Making the money is, is a formality. So me giving you a million dollars doesn’t give you the skills. And, and of those two, one of them is far, far more valuable. And so the point here is like in creating the content, recognize that I’m spending one of my most valuable resources, and in fact, maybe my most valuable, which is my time.
Anthony: I don’t, I don’t get more of that back in an attempt to share a priceless education of the skills that you need to be able to go and make. And so those are pretty much the two most valuable things I have to give. And when people look and say, I want your money, really, you know, what they’re upset about is the world is playing a game of chess and they’re frustrated that their, their strategy for playing checkers isn’t [00:08:00] transferring.
Anthony: It’s not winning the game. They’re not doing well, and they’re frustrated. And my, my feedback to them is just, you know, stop complaining. Learn the game and then play it better. And at the end of the day, like money wasn’t gonna solve your problems. But the skills will. The skills can. And so that’s where you need to be focusing your time and energy.
Anthony: So I hope this brought you a little bit of value, a new perspective, a new lens through which to look at these things and hopefully. Um, if you were in that camp of thinking like money’s gonna change all your, your problems gonna solve everything, maybe now you start to see like, that’s not the goal. That shouldn’t be the thing that you’re focusing on.
Anthony: Instead, you should be focusing on the skills that will lead you to that destination. So if you got any value out of this, guys, do me a favor. Share it with whoever you think might need to hear this message if they’re out there unknowingly trolling people. And until next time, stay hyper focused, my friends.
