THIS is the Key to Mastery
The Amplified Impact Podcast

Quick thought I’ve been chewing on: “Amateurs practice until they get it right. Masters practice until they can’t get it wrong.”
I’ve been diving into this mindset, especially as I prep for a big speech.
It’s a grind, but aiming for perfection, not just proficiency.
Where in your life could you adopt this approach?

I want to share with you just a little concept that I’ve been thinking about a lot recently that I think can serve you really well as you go into your day, into your week. And let me tell you a story, though. It starts with a couple months back in November, I get an invite from my buddy Hunter Thompson to go and speak at his conference called Raise Fest. This is where he brings together thousands of, of amazing capital raisers within the real estate industry. So these are some of the best and brightest minds within the space. It’s an absolute honor. And he tells me, you’re going to go on and speak right before Tom Bile, who is a guy that I hold in really high regard as one of the best public speakers out there. And public speaking, giving keynotes and getting on stages is one of my goals for the next year.
Giving a TED talk is one of my lifelong goals. And so I was like, yeah, let’s do this. But in the grand scheme of things, I don’t consider myself to be a keynote speaker. I don’t consider myself to be particularly good at it. I’ve given maybe ten or twelve over the course of my career and they’ve always gone, well, I think I’m good, but I’m not great. And coming off that call with Hunter, I was like, man, I really want to be great if I’m going to go on right before Tom. And the only way to become great is through just pure repetition, pure putting in the work, right? And so I resolved that I was going to practice my speech every single day, at least once a day from November until the end of February, when I get on stage to give it. So for context, that’s what, like over 100 repetitions going through this 40 minutes speech, which is over 40 hours of practice time.
Actually, it’s way more than 40 hours, isn’t it? Yeah. It’s about 100 hours of rehearsal time, which is a few weeks of concentrated effort. Right? And I told somebody this the other day, and they go, why are you practicing so much? They’re like, that seems unnecessary. And the concept that I want to share with you today, you’ve probably heard it before, but just want to reinforce it because it is so damn important, is that amateurs practice until they get it right. Masters practice until they can’t get it wrong. That is what I’m striving for right now. I am striving not just to get it right, I’m striving to have it so hardwired, so ingrained, that there is no way I can get it wrong. If the fire alarm goes off, if something distracts me, if the microphone breaks, if I get a headache, doesn’t matter.
I have rehearsed this thing so many times that there is no way I can get it wrong. And that is, I think, the standard we should all be striving for in anything that we’re trying to do at an exceptional level. And I think just that one little reframe helps calibrate the expectations of how much work it’s actually going to take to get to that point. Because you can actually get to that level of, oh, I did it right once. Right? You can get to that level relatively quickly. But to get to the level where you can’t get it wrong, that requires a lot of effort. And truthfully, I’m not going to be able to get there probably by the time I give the speech. But that’s what I’m striving for, right? Like truthfully, to practice it so many times that I can’t possibly get it wrong would require maybe thousands of hours of work, which I just don’t have to give to it in the time period that I have.
But that is the mindset that I’ve been taking into it and that’s what’s been helping me every day. Because it’s hard. I’m a busy guy, right? And to find an hour on my schedule that I can dedicate every single day to talking to myself and giving this speech to the mirror or to the camera or just wherever I happen to be, it’s hard to find and carve out that time to prioritize it. But it helps me to remember why I’m doing it, why that rep is so damn important. Because right about now I’m probably close to, what? 70 reps in. Yeah, it’s probably about 70 reps. I’d guess. It’s very easy to start thinking I’m good enough.
I can skip today or I can phone it in, right. It starts getting easy when you get to that level of the middle ground, intermediate, where you start taking things for granted. And interestingly, a corollary to this in the rock climbing world is it was really surprising the vast number of injuries that occur within rock climbing. A lot of people think it’s the beginners that get hurt, or maybe even the experts who are doing the more dangerous things. But the reality is that beginners and experts don’t get hurt nearly as much as the people in the middle, the intermediates. The reason for this is that in the beginning you’re so hyper conscious of the fact that what you’re doing is dangerous, that you go through your double checks and you spend that extra time and you’re overthinking a lot of things. Right. But that overthinking also keeps you safe.
The experts, they became experts because they’ve done it so many times now that they can’t do it wrong. Right. So by default of the fact that they are where they are, that has created systems and processes that they don’t tend to get hurt. Right. But the people in the middle, the people in the middle are the ones who have been doing the thing long enough to know what the risks are. And they’ve gotten a little taste of, oh, I’ve done it right a number of times, and then they stop being as diligent as when they’re a beginner, and that’s when the injuries start to occur. And if you survive long enough through those injuries or you avoid those injuries entirely, then eventually you become an expert. Right.
And your systems for avoiding injury are such that you don’t get hurt. But it’s just really interesting. In the same way, the reason we get hurt is because we start to overestimate the ability of where we are and thinking like, oh, I’ve done it right, that’s good enough. The goal when it comes to safety and rock climbing or giving a speech on a stage or anything that you’re trying to do is to get so good that you can’t possibly get it wrong. That’s what you’re striving for. At least that’s what I’m striving for. So wanted to share that with you. Little idea that you can take into your day with you.
I hope it brings you some value. As always, thanks for being here. We’ll catch you in the next episode. But until then, stay hyper focused, my friends.
