What is the Dragon You Need To Fight This Week
The Amplified Impact Podcast
December 13th, 2023
Ever felt like life’s an epic adventure? I sure do.
I’ve been pondering the hero’s journey lately. We all get to choose: be the hero or be the victim.
But being a hero means facing dragons, those challenges that push us beyond limits. Think about it…our lives are so much more vibrant when we’re conquering monstrous obstacles.
I realized this when I transitioned from a life of thrilling adventures to a more mundane routine. Something was missing…so I reframed my week’s tasks as dragons to conquer.
What’s your dragon this week? That challenge that’ll make you feel like a hero, moving you closer to your best self?
Write it down and go fight it.

Anthony Vicino:
Let me ask you a question, and more importantly, I need you to ask yourself this question. What is the dragon that you need to fight? This week, I’ve been thinking about this concept of fighting dragons because I am a science fiction and fantasy nerd, and I like to imagine my life as this epic adventure. And it’s one of the reasons that attracted me to writing science fiction and fantasy novels for so many years. And I believe that we all get the choice of either being the hero of our story or the victim. And it is just a choice. It’s a very hard choice, and it’s a choice most people don’t realize they can make. And so because they believe the choice is outside their control, it’s not something that they can actually decide. They go through life as the subconscious victim.
Anthony Vicino:
They don’t realize they’ve chosen to be the victim, and yet they allow life to victimize them. And I think the first step in pursuing your greatness is recognizing that you can be the hero. All you have to do is make that decision. And if you are the hero of your story, then that means, by definition, you need to have epic obstacles and villains and monsters to overcome, things that will challenge you and will be difficult and will push you to the limits of your capacity. You can be the hero of a story, but the story is so much better when you are overcoming ferocious, fierce, insurmountable monsters and dragons, right? Lord of the Rings is not nearly so interesting if taking the ring to Mordor is just a matter of hop skipping across town and fighting traffic. But because Sauron and his orcs and all the armies of the Dark Lord are rallied against this small band of friends, now we have epic stakes, and I think so often in our own life. I’ve noticed this with myself and something that Jamie and I reflected on a number of years ago. Because I kept going in and out of these depressive episodes, we couldn’t really figure it out because life was good.
Anthony Vicino:
And I was like, I don’t understand why I feel so empty all the time. Part of that’s depression. Part of that is seasonal affective disorder. But a part of that, too, is that for so many years in my life, in my 20s, while I wasn’t on a path that was making me a lot of money and wasn’t making me particularly useful to society, being a professional rock climber meant that I got to spend pretty much every day of my life out in nature doing epic things, feeling like an epic adventurer, feeling like an epic hero of my own life. And when that was taken away because I started focusing on business and doing other things and getting into the mundane rigmarole of life that’s not nearly as epic and exciting. I started to feel it. And so one of the things we recognize is that for me to feel happy and to feel fulfilled and feel enjoyment, I need to feel like I’m doing epic things. And I think actually I’m not alone at this.
Anthony Vicino:
I think we all need this. I think for us to not feel relegated to NPC status, which is non player character, like just another character in the video game. To feel like the main character, we have to have epic quests and epic challenges that we’re trying to rise against. And this is where I think the to do list doesn’t do us nearly enough justice because a to do list, who gives a hero a to do list beside quests, but quests but calling like those are challenges worthy of a hero. And so one of the things I’ve been thinking about in these last couple of weeks is like, reframing my to do list or the one thing, the one thing that I need to get done for the week instead of orienting it as a thing that needs to be done. I think about it as a dragon to be conquered. What is the one dragon this week that I need to conquer that’s going to make me feel like a hero, that’s going to move my life forward, that’s going to be demonstrably proving that I am the person capable of rising to the top in my narrative and in the pursuit of this also move my life closer to my greatest self. And so I don’t know if that’s something that resonates with you, but for me, it’s a fun way of thinking about it.
Anthony Vicino:
So instead of having my to do list have my, like, I sit down and I figure out this week’s dragon. What’s this week’s dragon for you? That’s the question I want you to ask yourself in your epic adventure on your quest. What is the epic dragon that you need to slay this week? Write it down and then go fight it and I’ll catch you guys back here tomorrow. Stay hyper focused, my friends.
