Episode Transcript:

Over the years, I have met hundreds and hundreds of massively successful people, whether that’s entrepreneurs, athletes, what have you. Right. And I’ve noticed this recurring attribute, or rather, four recurring attributes of these successful people. And I want to share these with you today, because by being aware of what traits these successful people seem to embody, we can reverse engineer, we can triangulate our own progress towards these things, we can set these as our north stars and say, I need to be working on these four traits if I, too, want to be successful. So here they are. The first. Well, actually, let me give you all four. The four traits are, they are clear, they are confident, they are consistent, and they are committed there.

You don’t have to listen to the whole podcast. No, I’m just kidding. Okay, let’s dive in. The first one is they are clear. And being clear actually manifests itself in two different ways. Number one, people who are clear have a clarity of vision. They know where they’re going in life. They know what their big goals are.

They know what their values are. They know what their standards are. They know what they stand for and what they don’t stand for. They have this self awareness, and from that clarity comes speed. They can move towards their goals more quickly because they can quickly identify what are those things that are not moving me towards my goals. And they can make a decision to say no towards that. And instead, they say the yeses to the things that do move them forward. But it starts by knowing where it is.
They’re even trying to go. Most successful people that I’ve met, athletes, they are crystal clear. I want to win the Olympic gold. I want to win this championship. I want to run. This time, they are so dialed in to what it is that they’re trying to achieve. They can see the vision perfectly clear in their mind. So that’s the first one, is clarity.
But there’s another aspect to this, is that because they are so clear about where they’re going, their vision, they also have the ability to communicate that vision clearly to other people and thus enlist them into joining the team and moving towards that goal together. This is an amazing concept to think about, which is, the more clear you can see your own vision, the better you’re going to be able to communicate it to everybody around you. And that clarity of communication is inspiring. That’s motivating. It makes people want to work with you. Think about Elon Musk. What’s his dream? To make humanity and interplanetary species, to get them to Mars. Everything that he’s doing.
From Tesla to Neuralink to the boring company to Starlink, all of these companies are in service of that grand vision. He’s so clear, and thus he’s able to move very quickly towards that goal, and he’s able to communicate it in an inspiring way to his team and to the world. So that’s the number one trait of successful people, is clarity. Number two, they are confident. They have this unshakable belief in themself and their abilities to find the solutions to overcome the obstacles, to achieve the thing that they’ve set their mind to, because they know they’re not crazy. Successful people are not crazy. They know that they have these insanely high standards for their life and their goals. Elon Musk going to the Mars, that is a crazy, outlandish goal.
And yet he’s confident that he can do it, because he has this unshakable belief that he has the resourcefulness, the desire, the energy, the network to make this thing a reality. Now we have to ask ourselves, which comes first, the belief or the action? The belief or the excellence? The belief or the failure? And in my experience, belief always precedes excellence, and it always precedes failure. So whether you think you can or you think you can’t, you are right. So you might as well hold on to the beliefs that are going to move you towards your goals to be in alignment. And this is one of the hardest things that I had to rewire in my own mind, because I always took it as I am rational. I am a rationalist. That’s why I have these rational goals for my life and rational beliefs about what’s possible. When I say things like, anything, anything is possible if you attack it with enough intention.
Of course, people take to the comments and they’re like, well, you can’t fly. You can’t do this, that the other thing. You can’t breathe underwater. Right? People who are looking for a reason why the thing can’t work should never stand in the way of the people who are committed to finding the way to make it work. So regardless of whether or not the thing is technically true, as long as it doesn’t violate some underlying truism of physics, the thing is possible. That’s my belief. And, you know, maybe even outside of the bounds of physics, maybe it still is possible. But regardless, your belief creates your reality.
And successful people are masters at this reality distortion field of creating and projecting this reality distortion field, which is the phrase that people like to use when they talk about Steve Jobs and all the things that he accomplished. He has this way of altering people’s perception of what’s even possible. So that’s the second trait of successful people here. The third is that they are consistent. Successful people are the most consistent people because they know that it’s not about the intensity of the activity. It’s not how much you do the thing in a short period of time. It’s how long over what time frame you can show up every single day and make the tiny little actions that compound into big results. That’s really the stuff of success, is consistent pressure applied daily.
If you can show up every single day and do the same thing for a decade, you will be successful at that thing. You will be. Now, you have to be really intentional about what that thing is that you’re applying yourself towards to make sure that it actually can move you in the direction of your goals. But if all else was equal, the consistent person will always be the intense person. The person who shows up for two weeks and does 1000 reps every single day. He will lose to the person who shows up for ten years. And just every single day does 100 reps. 100 reps every single day for ten years.
That person is very hard to beat. All right. The fourth trait of the successful individual is that they are committed. They are committed to the vision. They are committed to the path before them. Another way of saying this is that they are focused, they are obsessed. They don’t get distracted with all the different shiny objects. They know what the vision is for their life.

They are clear about where they are going. They’re confident in their ability to get there, and they’re showing up consistently and with commitment. They are not just going half assed in the direction of their dreams. They’re not just going for a little while in the direction of the dreams. They are constantly moving forward and saying no to all the little things that would move them tangential perpendicular to the direction of their dreams. That’s the hardest one, I think, is actually resisting all of the different shiny objects in life. Because as you become more and more successful, those shiny objects get shinier and shinier and more beautiful and more distracting. But if you really want to be successful, you need to stay committed to the course.

And if you do that, if you stay clear, if you stay confident, if you stay consistent, if you stay committed, I believe there’s practically nothing in this world that you cannot achieve. So that is the blueprint to success right there. Take it. Run with it. I’ll see you in the next episode, my friend.
