Your Skills Don’t Really Matter

The Amplified Impact Podcast
September 12th, 2023

Today, I’m diving into a topic that struck me while watching the US Open in tennis.

What I realized watching these elite athletes is that, at the top level, it’s not about having extraordinary abilities. It’s about accessing them when it counts.

The best performers maintain their level when it matters. They don’t crumble under pressure.

And guess what? Most of life’s moments don’t really matter in the grand scheme of things. There are fewer games than practices.

So, what can you do? Work on your physiological design to get into your best mental and physical state.

Remember, you’re probably good enough right now.

What sets you apart is your consistency in showing up as your best self, especially when you don’t feel like it. That’s the secret of champions.

TWEETABLE QUOTE:

“What I realized in watching these players is that at the highest levels of the game, your abilities don’t actually matter because everybody at the top is equally skilled.”- Anthony Vicino

Episode Transcript:

Anthony Vicino:

So right now, at the time of this recording, the US. Open for tennis is being played out in New York today. The the semifinals are on between Djokovic and Ben Shelton. Verse and then Carlos Alcarez versus Danielle Medvedev. If you guys don’t know, I’m really into tennis. It’s like the one sport that I’m I’m really, really into that and f one in chess. Okay, I guess I’m gonna swallow. Is chess a sport? I’m gonna it’s a game, but don’t tell chess players it.

Anthony Vicino:

But what I realized in watching these players is that at the highest levels of the game, your abilities don’t actually matter because everybody at the top is equally skilled. They might have slightly differently different skills, but everybody is roughly equal in terms of their physical capacities, in terms of their ability to hit the ball. And this is the same regardless of tennis. If you look at basketball, the difference between LeBron and your average NBA player is probably not all that different from an ability standpoint. He’s probably not that much faster, that much bigger, that much stronger, can’t jump that much higher. Same in business. The people at the top of the game, it’s not necessarily that they’re smarter, harder working, or more creative. What I realize in watching these guys is that your abilities don’t matter as much as you think, or at least not the one that most people think of.

Anthony Vicino:

I think what separates the best from everybody else is merely their ability to tap into their abilities when it matters. And what I mean by that is, you think about Michael Jordan, you think about Novak, Djokovic, Tiger Woods, these guys who are considered the goats of their sport, of their craft. And it wasn’t that Michael Jordan was some insane physical anomaly compared to his rivals. It wasn’t that he could bounce the ball any better or shoot the ball necessarily any better. It was that he could do those things in the moment when it mattered most. My buddy and I, Brandon, when we were playing tennis the other day, he goes, you’re only as good as you are when you’re under pressure. And I thought that was a beautiful concept and a lot of truth to that, because I know a lot of people who are really good in practice, but then they struggle on the big stage and we see this all the time. It’s like the unrealized potential, the talent that just could never be, because for whatever reason, they just never could live up to their greatness in the moments that actually mattered.

Anthony Vicino:

So you’re only as good as you are when there is pressure. And that is really the deciding factor. And the best of the best are the ones who their ability to tap into their full potential ability in those moments that matter is just better, right? It’s that their level doesn’t drop. They continue to perform as their potential dictates. And I think that’s the thing that we should think about more so than do I have the abilities? Because you probably do. It’s probably that you’re just not tapping into that in the moments that really matter. And one of the interesting things that I’ve come to realize in life in general is that there are very few moments that actually matter. There are fewer games than there are practices.

Anthony Vicino:

And so we spend 90% of our time in practice honing the skills and whatnot, but then only a very small percentage of time actually competing and playing the thing. And this is the same in business as well. It’s a little bit different arena. But the truth is there’s fewer moments that really, really matter than there are moments that don’t. And so your ability to show up in those moments with your highest and best self is very important. And to do that, I think a lot about physiological design or manipulating your physiological systems to put yourself into your best mental state, into your best physical state. We’ve talked about this in the Hyper Focus Masterclass, which if you want to learn more about you go to beyond theapex.com Hyperclass, hyper Focus rather not hyperclass, teach you how to be hyper. And we talk about how to use olfactory scent to manipulate your physiology.

Anthony Vicino:

So candles like I have back here, or some boom boom, which is just a sniffing stick full of different scents, it’s delicious. Or using noise canceling headphones and binaural beats, or doing push ups between work sessions. There’s all sorts of ways that we can manipulate our body and putting it into the highest and best state. Our breathing is another great example of this. And so just the lesson for today is and it’s one that I’m just trying to internalize for myself and just a reminder, a lot of these podcast episodes are more for me to remember than it is for me to teach that you probably are good enough right now in a lot of ways. It’s your ability to show up as your best self consistently. That’s probably what’s holding you back because maybe you’re a great writer, maybe you’re a great designer, but it’s your ability to actually force yourself to sit down, show up and do the work in those moments when you don’t want want to. That’s really what separates the greats from the nobody knows of the never was, so to speak.

Anthony Vicino:

So that’s my thought for today. Your abilities at the highest level of the game don’t really matter. It’s your ability to tap into your abilities that matters. So sit with that percolate and as always, I’ll catch you back around these parts tomorrow. But until then, stay hyper focused, my friend.
